Title : Roundtable held on combating child pornography in the Republic of Moldova

Location : Moldova

On 9 July, OSCE (The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe) Mission to Moldova hosted a roundtable on the “Efforts to Combat Child Pornography in the Republic of Moldova,” organised as an initiative of the Network of National Organizations fighting against child prostitution and trafficking. At the event, CCF Moldova gave a presentation on the regional overview of “Child Sexual Abuse Images through the Use of Information and Communication Technologies,” supported by ECPAT International, and La Strada Moldova discussed cases of the online abuse of children in Moldova. The plenary discussions focused on steps to solve the problem in the country and improving the legislation of article 208/1 on child pornography, and awareness raising campaigns. Participants of the round table agreed to gather again in September to discuss the progress in fighting the problem and to establish new objectives. For further information, contact olhas@ecpat.net.

Title : Child Abuse Training on the Safety of Children on the Internet in Belarus

On 16 June experts from Children – Not for Abuse carried out training on safety of children on the Internet for experts from the Academy for Advanced Studies, in Minsk, Belarus. The training, which was attended by school teachers, focused on questions about rules and safe conduct on the Internet for children and was held with the assistance of the representative office of Microsoft in Belarus. Title : ECPAT conducts training in Ukraine on Internet safety for children

ECPAT International’s Associate for CIS carried out a training session in Kirovograd, Ukraine on Internet Safety for Children on 10 June 2009. The training is part of an ECPAT international and Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine project. Thirty participants – mainly computer teachers from 26 regions of Ukraine – took part in this educational course in order to further disseminate the information among teachers in their regions. The training started with an unexpected question: ‘Why do we need this if we know everything?’. However, as the course went on, participants became involved in the interactive activities and it was difficult to end the discussions, with the training continuing until 8pm. Title : 'make-IT-safe' campaign in Togo

On 8 June, children and young activists trained about commercial sexual exploitation in information and communication technology (ICT) by ECPAT International began their awareness raising campaign to make–IT-safe in Lomé, Togo. The 50 activists visited nine cyber cafes in different areas of Lomé and invited managers of these establishments to adopt codes of conduct and measures to protect children and young users of ICT’s. Posters, leaflets, stickers and t-shirts were distributed to managers and owners and a follow-up visit two weeks after the campaign was carried out to monitor changes in the safety of children at these cyber cafes. Title : Protecting Children in Cyberspace

On 16 May, the International Day of Telecommunications and Information Security was celebrated in Cameroon. The theme for this year was “Protecting Children in Cyberspace” and as part of the commemoration, the Cameroonian Minister for Telecommunications organised a conference at the Ministry and invited children and child rights organisations such as ASSEJA to attend. At the conference, the Minister asked for input from over 200 children and made recommendations for the protection of children from sexual predators on the Internet.
